North Korean Religious Freedom Database
Launched in 2020, the North Korean Religious Freedom Database is the most comprehensive public resource dedicated to documenting and preserving evidence of religious freedom violations in North Korea. By systematically recording cases of persecution, the database provides an essential tool for researchers, policymakers, legal practitioners, and human rights advocates seeking to expose the repression of religious adherents and hold perpetrators accountable.
The database contains extensive documentation on religious persecution, detailing the experiences of individuals targeted for their beliefs, the perpetrators responsible for these abuses, and the locations where violations have occurred. It identifies 514 victims, preserving testimony on the systematic targeting of religious practitioners by the North Korean state. The database has also recorded 195 perpetrators, offering a detailed account of those responsible for enforcing policies of religious repression. Additionally, 127 locations linked to these violations have been mapped, providing crucial insight into where acts of persecution take place, including detention facilities, interrogation centres, and execution sites.
By making this data freely accessible in both Korean and English, Korea Future ensures that evidence of religious persecution is not lost or suppressed. The database strengthens global efforts to document violations, pursue justice, and hold those responsible to account. As one of the few open-source initiatives exposing religious persecution in North Korea, the database provides a foundation for legal and policy interventions to combat impunity and support victims.
